We recently discovered that Air Bnb was collecting and paying a  local hospitality tax on our behalf that they didn’t previously collect. We were also paying it.  Not surprisingly, our local tax authority did not report the over payment.  They claimed that Air bnb does not report to them who they are submitting for-providing no trail and thus cannot refund us.

Anyway, does anyone have any experience similar and  were you able to get any refunds from Air bnb? Any suggestions on that process would be appreciated.

If Airbnb is remitting taxes on your behalf, then that is because they have a deal to do so. There is a very specific process on Airbnb for having Airbnb not remit them on your behalf and you essentially are granting them indemnity for any underpayment. I don’t think Airbnb will refund you for this. I think the move here is getting a refund from the tax authority for overpayment; you will likely have to file an amended tax return.
