Airbnb is now sharing the real last 4 digits of guest phone numbers with us, and we’ve updated our smart lock functionality accordingly. Here’s how it works going forward:

If your code style is set to “guest phone”:

  • For locks that use 4-digit codes, we’ll use Airbnb’s last 4 digits directly. This means everything will continue to work as before, provided Airbnb supplies the digits.

  • If Airbnb does not supply the last 4 digits, we’ll fall back to the temporary phone number Airbnb provides.

  • For locks that use codes longer than 4 digits, codes will be generated either from the temporary phone number or, if none is available, from a random code.

If your code style is set to “random”:

  • Nothing changes - codes will continue to be created randomly as before.

Other booking channels (Vrbo, Booking.com, direct, etc.):

  • We’ll continue to generate codes based on the guest’s real phone number, just like before.

To summarize: If your locks use 4-digit phone-based codes, you don’t need to make any changes - your setup will continue working as expected.

So will the guests last 4 be available to everyone on hospitable for Airbnb guests or just those with an integrated smart lock? Ours is not a smart lock so the codes get manually programmed but our check in information for guests says it’s the last 4 of your registered Airbnb phone number so is going to cause problems with temporary phone numbers.

@amy_awk The %guest_phone_last_4% shortcode will also display correctly, provided that Airbnb supplies the real digits. 😉

Crazy question here...does Airbnb have the ability to record/save transcripts of conversations on these temporary Airbnb phone numbers?

Hi @Megan, calls do get routed, but I don’t think Airbnb shares the recordings or transcripts with hosts or guests. It’s best to double-check with them directly.

@Megan @Petra Podobnik There’s a very good chance though that they’re intercepting/relaying/storing/monitoring the text messages that get relayed through their “fake” numbers. Until informed otherwise I’m going to assume that it’s no different than messaging through the Airbnb app.

This is great news (and worthy of a callout during a Town Hall) @Kristijan Laco .

One point of clarification - is the “temporary number” Airbnb displays inclusive of the guest’s actual last 4 digits or HSPTB gets the actual 4 which are different than the “temporary number’s” last 4 digits?

So is A or B True:

A: Airbnb will show a temporary phone number that includes the guest’s real last 4 digits: 201-555-1212 (e.g. in this case, guests real number that remains undisclosed is 865-345-1212) HSPTB shows guestcode as 1212

or

B: Airbnb will show a temporary phone number that does NOT necessarily include the guest’s actual last 4 digits. 201-555-1212 (e.g in this case, guest real number is 865-244-4569) HSPTB shows guest code as 4569

@anthonyrallo B is true. We get an entirely new attribute from Airbnb which includes the real last 4 digits of the phone number.

Thank you for clarifying. I’m glad at least that they’re passing the last 4 to you. I had asked an Airbnb community manager to share that at the annual meeting a few months back and it seems it didn’t fall on deaf ears.

Follow-up question @Kristijan Laco or @Petra Podobnik - Will the ACTUAL last 4 numbers be surfaced within Hospitable somewhere?

I’m asking b/c with the introduction of temporary phone numbers by Airbnb a challenge has been created when syncing with our CRM system and then cross-referencing with StayFi.

IF the last 4 numbers are surfaceable (via HSPTB dashboard and via API) that could potentially allow for a proper mapping with the guest information in our CRM.

@StayFi_Arthur

The ability to display the real last 4 digits will come as part of the global check-in form rollout. When guests complete the new Hospitable check-in form in the guest portal, and consent to share their real contact information, those details including the actual phone number will be automatically updated in the guest profile.

So @Kristijan Laco are you saying that prior to that nowhere will the TRUE last 4 be displayed?

So just to confirm, the new hospitable check-in form is only for hospitable direct bookings, correct?
