Do You Allow Pets?

I was going to allow pets in my STR during the slower season, but with these new Airbnb changes, I’m seriously questioning it and wondering if it’s worth it.

My question is two-prong:

  1. A. Do you think you get more bookings allowing pets? B. What rules do you have?
  2. What are you doing as far as expectations and rules surrounding pets with the new Airbnb policy changes coming up? For instance, I’ve heard some Hosts have had their rule section flagged where they ask Guests to pick up their dog’s poop.

Well the good news is that you don’t have to worry about the new Airbnb rules until March 1, 2026 since you’re connected to a PMS.  We have always allowed pets because we are in a town where most people are traveling through, heading to another destination.  The biggest issue will of course be pet urine, scratched doors and pet hair.  We ask guests pick up after their pet and most people do.  If you are in a high traffic area where people are traveling through it will probably help boost your bookings, but I’d do a little market research to see who else near you allows pets and if they are booked more than you are.  Best luck!

Airbnb now seems to consider any kind of animal to be a “pet.” There’s apparently no way to allow dogs without also allowing cats, miniature horses, roosters, pot-bellied pigs, etc. Something to keep in mind.

I think it’s important to know your guest stats. We get 30% of stays having pets so it’s a huge value to allow and we charge for pets so we earn revenue on it.

That’s pretty crazy. It’s not like hotels let people have their dogs poop everywhere without cleaning up after them. My building doesn’t accept pets, so I don’t have a decision to make. In a former building I owned in, the building only accepted dogs; so I would be dealing with the same issue of ostensibly not being allowed to set a rule that the pet must be a dog.

I’m also curious if anyone has had an issue with fleas in the house. That’s something awful I’ve also thought about possibly happening.

@Airbassador Thank you for the response. I live in a vacation area so it’s a destination place rather than a place people pass thru.
